Internet.Org turns one, Facebook announces expansion plans

Facebook Inc plans to scale up its service to offer free basic internet on mobile phones, an executive said, after introducing the application in 17 developing countries over the past year. In a blog post released to mark the first year of the initiative, Facebook said it will open a portal allowing any mobile operator to offer the service under its Internet.org platform. Facebook currently partners with specific operators to launch the service in different countries. Internet.org has brought over 9 million people online over the past year, Chris Daniels, vice president of product for Internet.org, told Reuters on Monday. Facebook developed the platform with six technology partners to bring an estimated 4.5 billion unconnected people online, mainly in Latin America, Asia and Africa. Google Photos uploads your pictures even after uninstalling the app

It looks like Google Photos will continue uploading your photos even after you uninstall the app itself on Android phones. David Arnott, Nashville Business Journalist editor, who discovered this anomaly, had previously tried the app, and then uninstalled it months ago. Just recently though, he decided he wanted to give the app another go. But after he reinstalled the app signed in, he was surprised to see photos that had been uploaded after he deleted Google Photos from his phone. It's all in the settings It turns out that Google Photos' uploader settings is actually not part of the apps own settings, but in fact connected to the Google Settings app on Android phones, which is in charge of things like Google's locations, backup and search settings. WASHINGTON: Google has released a new tool for Gmail called Postmaster Tools. According to thenextweb.com, the tool allows qualified high-volume senders to analyze their mass emails to find out which messages are being sent to spam and to what sort reputation they have with recipients. Google said this will allow them to check on any mistakes and learn more about best emailing practices. Also, Gmail is overhauling the spam filter on the end-user side. It is now implementing machine learning to detect and block spam trying to pass off as wanted mail. The company says that it has also improved its overall phishing protection. The new filter will also be able to learn what kind of emails the users like to read based on their habits.

Google wants to bring free wifi to the world…. and it’s starting NOW

No longer will we have to buy an overpriced coffee to get a rubbish wireless internet connection. *Fist pump* Google is rolling out free wifi in New York as part of a trial the company hopes will eventually span across the whole of the world. The internet giant has even gone as far as to set up a company specifically dedicated to the task, called Sidewalk Labs. How will they do this you ask – through turning 10,000 of the big apple’s old phone booths into ad-supported ‘Wi-Fi pylons’ These converted booths are also intended to provide cell-phone charging, free domestic phone calls and a touch screen information hub about the city and transit directions. According to   Bloomberg News , these ‘pylons’ will be rolled out across New York this autumn.
