Microsoft Edge showed significant performance gains over Google Chrome, but what's most impressive is that Microsoft used benchmarks created by Apple and Google. Microsoft bats for White-Fi to help Digital India

NEW DELHI: US software major Microsoft Corporation says its newly-developed White-Fi technology can provide free Wi-Fi connectivity to a large section of the Indian population, thus, giving a boost to the Prime Minister's Digital India initiative. White-Fi or television White-Space technology works like Wi-Fi on a bigger scale. "TV White-Space technology puts the unused spectrum in the TV channels to a good effect," Prashant Shukla, national technology officer at Microsoft India, told ET. "This technology has potential to provide free connectivity to large sections of the Indian population through wider coverage and economical deployment and licence-free access." Most of the cuts at Microsoft will be in the phone division, and the company will write down the value of its phone business acquired from Nokia by some $7.6 billion. WASHINGTON: Microsoft on Wednesday announced plans to cut 7,800 jobs along with a reorganization of its Windows Phone unit which has struggled in the mobile market. The move represents the second major round of layoffs in a year for Microsoft, which  cut some 18,000 jobs a year ago  as part of its effort to integrate the Nokia handset division.
