New Moto G is now waterproof and customisable

Image
Motorola has unveiled the latest update to its popular Moto G smartphone, offering the usual combination of low price and premium specs, but with added water-resistance and the ability to customise the device using Motorola's Moto Maker service. When Google first launched the Moto G in November 2013, it was widely praised for its low price, quad-core processor and HD screen, offering a wallet-friendly alternative to some of the premium devices on the market at the time, like Apple's iPhone 5c. Less than a year later, Motorola updated the device with a bigger screen, better cameras and microSD storage expansion, and raised the price from £135 to £145. Now the company has unveiled the third-generation Moto G – the first to be launched since Lenovo bought Motorola from Google for $2.9bn (£1.8bn) in 2014. The new Moto G runs Android Lollipop and has a 5-inch HD display, all-day battery life and built-in SD card support. It ...

new design leaked images of OnePlus 2

Image
Less than a week is left for the  launch of OnePlus 2 , but the smartphone's specifications and images have been leaked by Chinese certification agency TENAA. The images show that the upcoming OnePlus flagship will look quite similar to its predecessor complete with the sandstone back panel, but feature a metal frame on the sides. On the back, the camera setup now includes a laser-focus system, which we have seen previously in LG G4 smartphone. Additionally, the design is a little tweaked, as the smartphone will have a hardware Home button, which was missing in the first model. This Home button has likely been added to accommodate the fingerprint sensor, which the company says will be faster than Apple's TouchID. On the left side the sim card slot, whereas the volume rocker and power buttons are placed on the right. OnePlus has already announced a few features of its upcoming smartphone, including  4GB RAM , 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 810 chipset, 4G support, and...

Samsung's Galaxy Tab S2 is slimmer, smaller and squarer

Image
Samsung has  revealed  its new 8-inch and 9.7-inch Galaxy Tab S2 models, and they're considerably different from last year. As revealed by a leak  yesterday , it shrunk both of last year's models  and killed the widescreen (16 x 10) aspect ratio, instead giving them an iPad-like 4 x 3 format. The company said that'll help "recreate the viewing experience of browsing through traditional print media," and make it easier to read e-books and web pages. On the other hand, less of the screen is now available for watching movies, particularly since both Galaxy Tab S2 models have also taken a step down in resolution from QuadHD to 2,048 x 1,536. Obviously, Samsung thinks people use their tablets for reading more often than watching movies. It's placed extra emphasis on that with the new Super AMOLED screen, which has a reading mode that "modifies the screen's brightness level to help users read content for longer periods of time." Helping as well is t...

'3 key reasons why hackers can't beat Apple Pay's security'

Image
Hackers always enjoy a product launch, and for good reason. Come the public release of any new smartphone, app, or service, hackers are given a new challenge and toy to play with, and will race to be the first group or lone wolf to crack its defences. This is particularly true for Apple products, where there is a massive jailbreaking community.  Jailbreaking is a popular practice that lets hackers remove the controls Apple builds into its products to stop people taking certain actions -- like downloading applications from third-party stores.  As a result, it's no surprise in the run-up to the release of Apple Pay, a contactless payment service, everyone from the Hacker News to The Guardian warned hackers would find ways to exploit the service.  Yet, come the release of Apple Pay in the UK on July 14, the doomsaying didn't ring true and we're still yet to hear about a successful scam or proof of concept attack targeting the platform.  According to security firm Fir...

Nokia phones could rise again in 2016, CEO says

Image
"We would only design them and license the brand name," Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri told a German magazine. If you had any doubt that Nokia wants to  return to the phone business  in 2016, allow CEO Rajeev Suri to extinguish them for you. “”We will look for suitable partners,” Suri told the German language  Manager Magazin The company could still back off from its hopes and dreams, but it sure looks like Nokia’s phones will rise from the ashes in 2016. As previously reported, Nokia wouldn’t try to rebuild the devices and service business it sold to Microsoft. “Microsoft manufactures mobile phones. We would only design them and license the brand name," Suri explained. Instead, third-party manufacturers would pay for the rights to make Nokia-designed phones and sell them under the Nokia name. Rumblings about this plan have been going on for some time. In late 2014, Nokia Technologies President Ramzi Haidamus said there was value in designing and licensing hand...
