11 best tech workplaces in India for 2015


India's Best Companies to Work for in 2015 list is out. The Economic Times, alongwith Great Place to Work Institute, recently concluded its annual study aimed at identifying the best companies to work for in India in 2015. Over 700 organisations, across 20 industries participated in the survey.

As part of this assessment, organisations were studied under two different lenses: Firstly, perceptions of the organisation's employees were measured. Over 1,80,000 employees were surveyed in all. Secondly, strength of people-related management practices of the organisations was assessed using a framework developed by the Institute. The list ranks the companies who have stood out to emerge as the best companies to work for in India in the midst of peculiarities of the country's culture, demographics and economy. 

And like past many years India's Best Companies to Work for list boasts of a fair share of technology companies. In fact, the top 2 on the list are technology companies. Also, there are as many as four tech companies in the top 10, while 11 companies from the sector make it to the Top 50. 

So, here's over to 11 Best tech workplaces in India for 2015...


RMSI (Rank: 1)

Topping the India's Best Companies to Work for in 2015 list is NCR-based IT services firm RMSI. RMSI offers GIS (geographic information system), modeling & analytics and software services. In 2011, RMSI underwent a management buy-out led by Rajiv Kapoor and Anup Jindal from its former owner RMS Inc, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daily Mail General Trust plc, UK. 

The company focuses on simple employee engagement practices like holding timely workshops to help employees develop life skills. 

RMSI has an in-house music band and a photography club. With travelling becoming a routine affair for most of its employees, RMSI felt the need to hold corporate social etiquette workshops around tea and wine appreciation. 

"Simplicity and transparency" are two key pillars of the RMSI workplace. Employees are encouraged to keep e-mail communication and formal meetings at bare minimal. "Direct communication is an important part of our DNA," says Rajiv Kapoor, CMD, RMSI.

Google (Rank: 2)
Next IT company on the India's Best Companies to Work for in 2015 list is internet giant Google. 

"We're all about creating an environment that focuses on innovation, enables peak performance and inspires well-being," says Rajan Anandan, vice president & managing director of Google, South East Asia & India.

At Google, an HR activity that translates into employee satisfaction is that they can play a role in managing how their careers are shaped. "Every employee takes ownership of their career. They manage their own career and are supported by their managers in the process," says Jayashri Ramamurthy, head of people operations, engineering and products, Google India. This process helps employees feel a sense of empowerment to take critical decisions about what they want to do as a next step to build their career.

Google has also put its weight behind preventive health checkups for spouses of employees (unique to India) as well as educating employees against unconscious biases. "We are retroactively addressing biases. They could be anything from having a bias on which part of the world an employee comes from to gender biases," she adds.

They are also working on making employees aware of the flexibility they can exercise at the work place, be it a work-from-home option or being able to take time off when required or even a part-time work option.

SAP Labs India Ltd (Rank: 5)
Next tech company on the list is at No. 5, SAP Labs India. "We pride ourselves on our lack of hierarchy and the absence of a 'sir-ma'am' culture, and give our employees space and freedom," says Dilipkumar Khandelwal, managing director at SAP Labs India. 

Differently-abled people, too, remain a focus for the firm, which hires at least 6-8 autistic people bi-annually, and provides special training to leverage their strengths. They are then placed in roles of testing, and as support staff.

Help is given to all employees at SAP who ask for it, in the form of speed mentoring -- designed to help workers get solutions to different issues. 

"We encourage a strong work-life balance for our diverse workforce," says Bhuvaneswar Naik, VP, human resources. There are 33 interest groups across the company - ranging from topics on literature to photography. There's also a childcare system available inside the premises, for children aged between 6 months and 6 years.

Intuit India (Rank: 7)
At No. 7 on the list is Intuit India, a company who terms diversity as a cornerstone of its work practices. 

The company has driven many initiatives towards better diversity practices -- whether in terms of gender or special needs. "Our workforce needs to reflect society at large," says Vijay Anand, vice president, India Development Center. 

Also, at Intuit, diversity isn't only about gender. LGBT issues are at the forefront, with the company initiating dialogue through the Pride Network, launched in October last year. 

Employees are encouraged to innovate on new projects outside their own, as part of "unstructured time" or about 10% of their working hours. These solutions can be turned into products during innovation jams and incubation weeks, and later tested on customers.

Teleperformance India (Rank: 15)
Next technology company on the list is BPO company Teleperformance India at no. 15. An HR report called Voice of the Internal Customer which has the views and feedback from employees is shared on the intranet. 

This report goes to the senior management, including the CEO and employees can track the progress of their ticket real time. 

The company with a headcount of 3943 employees, has a gender diversity of 1.3.9.

Pitney Bowes Software India (Rank: 19)
At No. 19 on India's Best Companies to Work for in 2015 list is Pitney Bowes Software India. What makes Pitney Bowes to the list is company's Player Program, which comprises a group of high-performing employees entrusted with recommending outstanding candidates. 

This is in addition to their existing roles and is a part of their job responsibility. The top 10% high performers are a part of this program. The company also organizes regular sessions by experts from reputed hospitals to share advice and counsel on healthy living for employees.

Pitney Bowes Software India has a headcount of 547, while the gender ratio at the company stands at 1:4.26.

Microsoft India (Rank: 20)
Microsoft India ranks at No. 20 on India's Best Companies to Work for in 2015 list. The software giant's one of the top work practice, according to the survey, is: The As Appropriate (AA) interview is a critical part of the Microsoft selection process. 

The AA interviewer is a person who is highly qualified to make hiring recommendations regarding a candidate's long-term capability because of his or her experience and background in making hires for Microsoft.

The company's employee headcount in India stands at 6,931 and gender ratio is 1:4.25

Adobe Systems India (Rank: 21)
At No. 21 on India's Best Companies to Work for in 2015 list is design software major Adobe Systems. The employee resource center was relaunched in the company this year as a 'You Expert on People Matters'. This model ensures a preliminary first level response within 24 hours of registering a concern. 

The idea is to ensure a consistent employee experience irrespective of the region and culture. The company's employee headcount in India stands at 3133, with a gender ratio of 1:3.97.

NetApp India (Rank: 22)
A regular on both India's Best Companies to Work for list NetApp ranks at No. 22. The data management and cloud solutions company has a 'Say Yes' programme where recruits from universities are sent sporadic gifts like care packs and a water bottle full of candy once they accept the offer. 

This helps ensure they don't change their mind in the interim period and remain excited about joining the company.

The company's employee headcount in India stands at 1,835, with a gender ratio of 1:3.84.
